GetNetWise -- working together to create a safe and secure online world.
The original GetNetWise was launched in July of 1999 as a public service provided by Internet industry corporations and public interest organizations to help ensure that families have entertaining, educational and safe experiences online. GetNetWise was an unprecedented community-wide effort to provide a simple but complete Kids' Online Safety resource.
The idea to place GetNetWise resources "one click away" from parents originated in discussions with Congressional and Administration leaders. Both Congress and the Administration had worked with industry leaders and well-known family groups in the 1997 Internet Online Summit and the 1998 America Links Up campaign to address children's safety online. Since then, industry leaders have focused creating a collection of digital resources that could be accessible from virtually all entry points to the Internet and which would provide families with information on how to guide their kids online. With the help of its partners, GetNetWise was able to become a "one click away" resource for over 90 percent of US online users via a direct link from their Internet Service Providers or portals. GetNetWise (GNW) became a trusted one-stop resource that is easy to use, easy to access, and that empowers parents and caregivers to provide children with a safe and rewarding online experience.
Over time, consumer needs expanded. As the Internet grew, so did concerns about privacy, security, and unwanted email. So, the GetNetWise coalition redoubled its efforts in order to expand the project into a comprehensive, one-stop resource that addressed all of these concerns. Today GetNetWise continues to educate Internet users and their families, enabling them to take advantage of all of the amazing benefits of the Internet while dealing with the challenges that acess to the Internet can present. Participating GetNetWise companies, non-profit groups and associations maintain their commitment to providing users and their families with the information they need to make the most of what the Internet has to offer while ensuring that their online experience is safe, positive and secure.
